Terra cotta Miniature Mask

Pora Pora, East Sepik Provence PNG TL Tested 100+ years old
Previous Collection: Private German Collection

Small terra cotta masks such as this example have been found to be attached to the body of large scale wood ancestor figures. Not much is known about these wonderful little creations because they are quite scarce. The expressive face possesses charm and charisma. The asymmetrical eyes and over-sized nose with its numerous piercing's are all attributes that speak to its early creation period. The varied surface shows wear and there is an insect casing on the side of the nose. Its quite incredible for something so delicate to be in such excellent condition after all this time.

This small mask stands 2.5 in tall.
