Suspension Hook

Suspension hooks such as these are characteristic of the region and this particular example carved from hardwood projects an intense spirit. The face has strong Iatmul features in addition to tribal tattooing on the body of the hook. The double hook shows good signs of use which includes an old native repair. The patina is deep and varied; and the original pigmentation is for the most part intact. The back of the head is pierced for attachment for the purpose of being hung in the men’s house.

This hooks stands 20 inches tall.
