Yam Mask

Maprik, Papua New Guinea
Early 20th Century

Brilliantly woven with great volumes; this fiber Yam mask exudes a presence that is similar to the wooden masks from the region. The face portion has a wonderful three dimensional quality with its pursed lips and bulbous head; creating a fantastic expression. The fanned open work ‘coiffure’ is beautifully done. The pigments are all original and their oxidized hues speak to this piece’s age; this example is older than most Yam masks on the market today.

This yam mask stands 11.5 inches in height; and 16 inches tall with base.
