Magic Amulet

Korwar, Geelvink Bay, West New Guniea
19th Century

This magnificent Korwar amulet is conceived in brilliant fashion. The small stylized seated figure possesses delicately carved abstracted hands and feet that curl in and away from the body. What makes this example so special is that the figure is holding an oversized mask in front of its head. The mask protrudes out from the figure which in profile creates a memorable image that exhibit’s the carvers imagination. There are chunks ritually carved out of the bottom of the figure; these were used in magical potions and also given to other individuals to ward off evil or protect in battle. This is an extremely rare type of Korwar.
