Amulet Mask

Lower Sepik
Late 19th / early 20th Century
Provenance: Belgian Collection

This amulet mask from the Lower Sepik would have been suspended from the small pierced hole at the top of its head. Stone carved and very old, this mask’s facial features are particularly enchanting, exuding a quiet aggressiveness. Carefully carved, the hooked nose and fierce eyes are particular to the Lower Sepik and the slight open mouth only enhances its emotion. Remnants of red ochre pigment are still visible and help define its expressiveness.

Height: 7 inches.
