Dance Mask

Ramu, Lower Sepik
Early 20th Century
Provenance: Private Old Belgian Collection

Lower Sepik masks complete with the original fiber attachment are rare. This example’s face is masterfully carved, expressing a quiet aggression and strong presence. Exhibiting classic Sepik facial features with strong purposeful eyes and vertical ridge at the top of the head, what is most intriguing are the mask’s realistically carved ears, place high on the mask’s periphery. The surface has acquired a deep encrusted patina.

Height: 12.5 inches
