Hunting Amulet

Lower Sepik, PNG
19th Century

Carved from very hard wood this surreal hunting charm is a fantastic rare example. These amulets were hung on the hunter's belt during excursions for game. The charm was supposed to call upon the spirits to make the hunt more 'successful'. In this case; from its suspension; the form is of a sleeping bat creating a wild image of half man; half bat. The face on this amulet is very well carved; with deeply inset eyes. The patina is varied from age and handling. In excellent condition.

This amulet stands 6.5 inches tall.
