Amulet
Korwar, Geelvink Bay, West PNG
19th Century
Ex: Linden Museum (Inv numbers 1607-1457)
This is a superb example of a Korwar magic charm; classically conceived
in early Korwar style. In addition to the stylized body and finely carved
face; the fluting on the headdress of the figure shows off the carver's
prowess and artistic vision. The eyes are inset with early European trade
beads enhancing the magical power of the amulet. The patina is deep and
varied from years of handling and ritual use.
This Amulet stands 7 inches tall.
