Sago Pounder

Ramu, Lower Sepik, PNG
19th Century
Previous Collection: John and Marcia Friede, Rye, NY

This rare and ancient pounder is of a water bird gracefully tipping its body over with feet perched on a plinth. The patina is exceptional; the surface is deeply encrusted but what is wonderful are the clear areas on the pounder that were extensively handled and exhibit a worn lighter colored wood. Classic lower Sepik geometric designs are found on the neck of the bird and under its feet.

This pounder stands 23" tall.
