Yam Mask

Abelam, Papua New Guinea
Early 20th Century

This is a classic Yam mask used during the Yam festival among the Abelam of PNG; but what makes this example special is the overall balance it possesses. The face has real character with its elongated nose; delineated ears and exposed tongue. The open-work coiffure is beautifully constructed with muted polychrome in shades of red; white, blue, and yellow. The weave is very tight and has an oxidized antique appearance. In excellent condition for its age.

This mask stands 14" tall.
