Headrest

Geelvinck Bay, Dutch New Guinea,
early 20th century

This dynamic carving of a stylized dog is quite rare. The distinctive form of the piece captures the movement of a dog rearing back and barking at some unseen object of curiosity in the distance. Deep brown patina and smooth surface along the sloping back are evidence of regular use. The carving is made from medium hard wood.

Length is 12 inches and it stands 6.5 inches tall.
