Stylized Animal

Lake Chambri region
South Sepik river
Papua New Guinea, 19th century

This remarkable piece is very old. It was carved with non metal tools from hard wood into a charming and lifelike animal totem of strong presence. The face is imbued with an animated quality and the endearing expression and dynamic form suggest that the animal is flying through the air. Although the exact function of the object is unknown, a corresponding reference can be found in Art of the Sepik River by Suzann Grub, 1988, figure 118. The condition is excellent only some age cracks and minor wear and tear. It has a grayish, weathered patina.

The length is 13 inches.
