Hapag

Ifugao, Philippines, early 20th C.
Provenance: Private California Collection

Crudely but well carved, this small Hapag is playful and expressive. Used as a divination object, the figure stands with a slightly slouched posture, his hands on the top of his thighs and a sweet thoughtful expression. Although the figure is simplistically carved, care has been taken to delineate fingers and toes and certain creases created by the natural slouch of a human body. This fetish would have had offerings continuously poured over it, and therefor has built up an encrusted patina, visible on the top of its head.
