Ancestor Figure, Bulul

Ifugao, Philippines, 19th c.

From a Private Italian Collection

While most Bululs are seated this example is standing. With its powerful tilting torso, tense legs and elongated arms; this "Rice God" is reminiscent of primitive man. The face is highly emotive; in addition the layered sacrificial surface enhances its memorable imagery. The patina comes from countless libations made throughout the decades. It is carved from a hardwood, and is in excellent condition.

The height is 16.5 inches.
