Shrine Figure

Nepal
19th/Early 20th Century

Among the many tribal regions of the world; the art of Jumla Nepal possesses an extraordinary amount of spiritual power and beauty. This Khas figure most likely sat at a shrine for decades receiving libations of sacrificial materials as an offering to the ancestors. In the classic meditating position, this object exemplifies its type with its heavily encrusted patina and mystic expression; while the sculpture itself also carries an aesthetic weight to it with its thick proportions. This is a fantastic early representation of the tribal art of Nepal.

This figure stands 13.5 inches tall.
