Ancestor Figure

Leti, Indonesia, 19th c. or before
Previous Collection: Irwin Hersey, New York

This archaic seated female ancestor figure is holding a ceremonial bowl between her hands. Its softly weathered and encrusted surface indicates it was mostly likely stored at some point in a sacred cave. The carved outlines of its eyes and mouth are still evident, but have been softly weathered into the plane of the face. It is a wonderful sculpture; with an enigmatic gaze, legs and arms projecting tension and a back carved in hour glass form. The legs and one earring have suffered some loss, but otherwise in excellent condition.

Its height is 6.75 inches tall
