Protective Hampatong Figure

Dayak, Kalimantan, Borneo
19th Century

This powerful protective figure from Borneo is reminiscent of the mystical abstract works of Giacommeti. The conception possesses a strong enigmatic feel with its unusual hand positioning and serene facial expression. The delicately carved feet are fixed to a plinth of wood which gives the figure height so a base is not needed. The patina is deep and blackened from decades of use and storage.

This figure stands 8.5 inches in height
