Ancestor Figure

Ataoro, Indonesia
19th Century

This archetypal ancestor figure from Ataoro island is an exceptional and ancient example. From every angle this figure is pleasing to the eye; a tell tale sign of a talented carver. The thin legs support the classic tight torso with over hanging arms. The real beauty is found in the figure's face. The central ridge of the head is delicately conceived and the pronounced facial plane gives depth to what is usually, in other figures, a roughly hewn flat face. The original skirt is still attached to the figure and the deep varied and encrusted patina tells a story of extensive use from hanging in the house at a shrine.

This figure stands 9 inches tall.
