Shaman’s Magic Amulet

Batak, Sumatra
19th Century

This is a strong and early example of a Batak shaman’s magic figure. These figures were mostly used in groups by a datu priest during rituals. The sculpture is delicate yet powerful at once; created in an elongated stylized form. There are two small cavities for the insertion of puk-puk; most figures have only one. The pierced ears are also unusual for Batak amulets; they must have retained ornaments at one time. The old encrusted surface speaks to its 19th century vintage. In excellent condition.

The Figure stands 7.5 inches tall.
