Ancestor Figure

Leti Island; Indonesia
19th Century
Ex: Antonio Casanovas, Madrid
Published ‘Maluku’ 1997 (Figure 1)

This is a superb example of Leti Island sculpture. The figure is not only stylistically rare but wonderfully conceived. The face is carved with great expression; it seems to exude the power of the ancestors. From its naturalistic torso to the over sized hands carrying the bowl; this sculpture has great flow and rhythm; a true balance between naturalism and stylization. This piece has acquired a deep encrusted patina from generations of use. In excellent condition.

This figure stands 6 inches tall.
