Pair of Amulets

Ataoro, Indonesia
19th Century
Previous Collection: James Willis, CA ( Inventory sticker under base )

Early Ataoro figures are hard to come by; miniature examples are even scarcer; to come across a complete miniature pair of this quality and age is extremely rare. Standing on thin legs with classic elongated arms and torsos surmounted by two expressive faces.. The rounded shoulders jut slightly forward producing a robust compact sculptural quality. The deep aged patina is proof positive this pair had been in use for generations; it has a richness that is covered by a smokey patina that could only develop over a long period of time. Joined together by old roped fiber this pair protected its owner, and by its quality of sculpture was most likely owned by an important individual.

This pair stands 5” tall.
