Shaman's Implement

Batak, Sumatra
19th Century
Previous Collection: Jonathan Franklin, Washington

Shaman’s use lime squeezers such as these during divination rituals, this example has a patina so deeply worn that most of the features and highpoints morph together. Wonderful details such as elaborate ears, deep curvature to the back and a faceted bottom are just some of its highpoints. The reddish black color of the wood is very beautiful and the shine on the surface is due to the depth of wear. One can only imagine the numerous rituals this object played a role in throughout its lifetime.

This figure stands 4.5” tall.
