Machete

Java, Indonesia
19th Century

This is a dynamic example of a machete from Java.  The handle is of a mythological beast and the quality of the carving is superb.  The long neck extends to an intensely carved head.  Details like the delicately carved striated lines on the face and deep eye orbits epitomize great Javanese sculpture.  The form of the iron blade is also beautifully artistic. The old woven rattan on the handle is original and intact and the overall patina is simply gorgeous; it is rich from decades of handling.. In excellent condition

This weapon stands 18 inches in height.
