Betel Nut Crusher

Lombok, Indonesia
19th Century

This is a fine example of a Lombok Betel Nut crusher.  The handle created from buffalo horn is of a finely carved hunkered old man most likely representing an ancestor.  The oversized head has a wonderfully emotive expression.  Most of the blades found on these objects are either missing or replacements; this blade is original to the piece.  The patina on the handle is deep from many years of ritual use.

This object stands 8.5 inches tall.
