Ceremonial Lime Squeezer

Batak, Sumatra
Early 20th Century
Provenance: Old California Collection

The Batak use lime in numerous ceremonial contexts. The juice was mixed with magic potions to improve efficacy. This wooden object was used to extract the lime juice for ritual purposes. The handle is carved in the shape of a naturalistic ancestor figure riding a singa head. The singa is a zoomorphic composite mythological figure in Batak cosmology and serves a protective capacity here. A wonderful shiny patina has been built up over time, suggesting extensive use.
