Magic Charm

Dayak Tribe, Borneo,
Indonesia, 19th c.
Previous Collection:
Irwin Hersey, NYC

Carved in a seated position and holding a shield to its chest, this charm is not as exuberant as the other charm presently offered, yet it still is just as compelling. The use of negative space is especially effective in this sculpture. The face is very expressive, with deep eye sockets and a strong mouth. It's a very old example, with a highly oxidized surface, and dark patina.
