Oil Lamp

Nias, Indonesia
19th Century

Beautiful ancient jar’s such as these were only used by high ranking members of the tribe. This example is in the style of the Osa Osa (The Animal Figure found on Stone seats in Nias Culture); the top of the jar; brilliantly executed in solid bronze; is the head of a dragon and the tail of a bird. Important to note is that the precision and symmetry involved in the casting of jars like this is extremely difficult. This example even has its original chain and hook for suspension. There is an old break on the back of the birds tail; but this does not detract at all from the beauty of this object.

This Jar stands 4.5 inches in height.
