Tau Tau
Sulawesi, Indonesia
Early 20th Century
Provenance: Jose Manuel Ferrater Lambarri, Barcelona

Tau Tau figures are unique to Sulawesi in Indonesia. Their name, Tau Tau, is translated as "men" or "statue". Made out of wood, they depict deceased ancestors and are used as protective agents, guarding the living and tombs. Simply carved and clearly depicting the figure's gender, Tau Tau figures have an almost photographic quality. This example's facial features are incredibly naturalistic, while the body is well proportioned and finely carved in exact detail.
