Awl

Dayak, Borneo
19th Century

A utilitarian object by nature this weaving awl carved from deer antler is a fine work of art. Zoomorphic in composition; surreal in conception; with its human face on an Aso's body; this is the type of inventive artistry the Dayak are known for. The surface wear and patina on the handle is softly worn and discolored from extensive use. The metal work is original and exemplifies their old forging techniques.

This awl stands 5.5 inches in height.
