Maternity Figure
Iban Dayak, Borneo, Indonesia, late 19th – 20th century
This figure is a fantastic cubistic sculpture. It has a very powerful
presence. Originally, it was attached to a shaman’s bark basket.
The front of the figure has a deep, crusty surface. The back has faint
lines where the rattan was present attaching the figure to the basket.
The surface on the back is less crusty than that of the front, indicating
that the back of the figure was protected from accumulating the crusty
surface from the open air hearth inside the longhouse.
The figure stands 8 inches tall.
