Stool

Lwena or Lwimbi, Angola
19th Century

Previous Collection: Irwin Hersey, NYC

In the form of a drum; this ancient stool from Angola is a very ambitious and fine example. Three faces are carved into this stool in classic flat form; very similar to Lwena masks. The surface on the object has a rich black patina but on the top and bottom where it most likely alternated its place on the ground is heavily eroded and worn suggesting long use. Stools like this are quite rare and although eroded this does not detract from the overall beauty and structure of the object. This is a perfect example of how utilitarian objects can become wonderful works of art.

This stool stands 15 inches tall.
