Mask
Yoruba, Nigeria
Early 20th Century

PROVENANCE: Private New York Collection.

This large face mask from the Yoruba is distinctive in style. Large facial features, with an open mouth and its tongue extended, this mask conveys power and vigor. The almond shaped eyes and nose with flared nostrils are characteristic of Yoruba aesthetics. Red and black pigments are still visible. Circular nodules stick out of the mask’s forehead, right cheek, and chin, potentially suggesting some sort of scarification.

Height: 15 1/4 in.
