Passport Mask

Dan, Liberia
Late 19th/Early 20th Century
Private European Collection.

A slightly larger sized passport; possibly a family mask; this example is completely pierced around the perimeter; it is carved with large projecting lips and a bulging forehead. Its eyes and mouth were carved with open negative space. The wood has a beautiful grain to it and the honey brown worn and eroded patina is a testament to its age. Due to the extreme wear to the attachment holes; we can assume this had a headdress at one time long ago. Carved from hardwood this is a fine Dan miniature mask.

This mask stands 4.75 inches tall.
