Amulet Mask
Baule, Côte d’Ivoire
19th Century
Provenance: Oscar Agard, Newark, NJ. Acquire 1970’s-1990’s, then by descent to family.

Small brass masks were often worn or kept on the person in a protective capacity. Made using lost wax casting, these small amulets are beautiful and personal. This example, with an oval face, large half eyes, worn nose, and surrounded by a notched decoration is an elegant example. The coiffure extends backward giving the mask an almost three-dimensional appearance from the side. This piece has built up a beautiful shiny patina from extensive handling.

Height: 1.5 inches
