Dance Mask

Salampasu, Congo
Early 20th Century
Ex: Private NYC Collection

The Salampasu were once known as fierce warriors and headhunters; this example; with its bulging forehead, diminutive nose and mouth filled with razor sharp teeth, projects a strong presence that epitomizes this reputation. The mask is covered in small sheets of copper that has developed a beautiful deep patina from years of exposure and use. The fine coiffure consists of tight woven fiber strands. There is a small area of missing copper on the chin; otherwise in excellent condition.
The mask stands 13 inches in height.
