Fetish Figure

Bena-Lulua, Zaire
19th Century
Previous Collection William Brill, NYC

Rising out of it’s original old fabric wrapping; this cubist fetish figure from the Bena-Lulua is quite rare. It’s strong angles make this piece stand out from other statues by the Lulua. The figure has a wonderfully handled burnished patina that is smooth to the touch. Many figures that are wrapped, especially when the bodies are wrapped, what’s underneath proves to be crude and or ignored because basically it wont be seen. This piece in particular breaks the rules and is fully carved underneath the fabric with what seems to be great detail.

This figure stands 8 inches tall.
