Gold weight

Ashanti, Ghana
18th/19th Century
Previous collection: Michael Oliver, NYC

Figurative gold weights such as this have always been hard to find. Since the stopping of gold weight usage around the turn of the 20th century there are countless fakes of these figurative weights. This example is an old original and very high quality example. This particular weight is of a male figure seated on a classic Ashanti stool about to smoke a pipe. The classic design patterns are present and the high points are worn down from generations of handling and use. In excellent condition.

This weight stands 2.1 inches tall.
