Ancestor Figure

Bura, Nigeria
Early 20th Century

It is rare to find Bura wooden sculpture; one is mostly exposed to their terra cotta creations. This powerfully built figure has a fantastic profile with strong shoulders and good use of negative space in between the arms. The face is strong with a grooved motif almost as if the face is carved in several plains. The patina is deep and aged from use and exposure; the underside of the feet show erosion; which is proper for this figure, as it would have stood at a shrine for extended periods of time. In excellent condition for its age.

This Figure Stands 12” Tall.
