Stone Effigy
Sherbro, Sierra Leone
18th century or earlier
Previous collection William Siegmann former curator of African art, for the Brooklyn Museum of art

This is an exceptional example of a Kissi/Sherbro pomdo figure. The features are tightly conceived and the presence is unlike many I have ever seen. The face contains true emotion and with the slight upward tilt of the head facing the heavens and hands positioned at the sides this effigy projects an almost idealized meditative quality. In excellent condition for its medium and extreme age.

This stone figure stands 6.75 inches
