Protective Figure
Grassfields, Cameroon
19th century
Previous collection Dr. Noble Endicott
Published Wild Spirits Strong Medicine, fig. #98

Standing on bent legs this small figure is extremely powerful. The artist rendered this figure with bulbous attributes as well as angular. The rounded belly is not a representation of pregnancy but an indication or warning to not disobey social norms. The patina is simply fantastic, deeply worn from excessive handling on all of the high points with a rich dark brown surface. Small old Cameroon figures such as this with this level of pedigree are very hard to come by.

This figure stands 6 1/4 inches tall.
