Brass Sword Decoration
Baule, Ivory Coast
19th Century
Previous Collection: Michael Oliver, NYC

In the form of a mask; this fantastic little sword decoration is cast in classic Baule style. Attention was paid to the slightest detail; such as the wonderful plaited coiffure; mouth projections possibly representing a labret; dotted eye brows and an overall beautiful face with beard. The patina definitely has that true ‘antique’ appearance that can only come about from real age and exposure over time. There is verdigris developing, along with worn areas from handling and the color has a warm depth to it that is difficult to put into words; again this is only found with early bronze/brass castings.

This Maskette stands 2.25” tall.
