Mortar

Bena Lulua, Congo 19th century
previous collection: Josef Herman, London

This standing figure was used as a mortar. It shows signs of wear due to regular use. A small, yet powerful object, this mortar projects strength which can be observed in the distinct lines of its delineated spine and attributed to its forceful stance and commanding expression.
On the right side there is a very old break where the right arm is missing.

It stands 7 inches tall.
