Canoe Prow
Murik Lakes, Papua New Guinea
Early 20th century
Provenance: Private American collection

Standing with slightly bent legs the figures neck arches back in dramatic fashion, as if it is gazing into the heavens beckoning for the protection and guidance of its deceased ancestors. It is carved from hard wood, and the remains of the original red pigment are evident throughout the sculpture. The figure is wearing a very long and profusely decorated headdress on its head. Scarification designs are carved on its chest and back. Ideally this sculpture should be seen in person to truly appreciate its dynamism.
