Charm

Dayak, Borneo, Indonesia
19th Century

Carved from the natural shape of the wood this rare charm consists of two ancestor figures facing back to back, forming a forked shaped 'Tree of Life". The smaller figure is beautifully carved slightly bending forward with one arm curved in front of the body, the other arm sculpted onto its back. The larger and more menacing figure with the long "beard" projecting down from its chin, appears more zoomorphic, with its elongated body and exposed teeth. This latter figure adds a sense of magic to the object. The projecting "beard" may have acted as a suspension hook, to be hung on a alter, or onto a warriors belt, for personal protection. The patina is deep from handling with some small areas of erosion.

This charm stands 6 inches tall.
